Map overview from Lower Deschutes River Management Area Boater Pass System

View of Mt. Hood from inside Jim's truck on the way to Madras

Next morning at the Econo-Lodge in Madras. Still some haze from the US 26 fires that erupted yesterday and forced us to go thru Maupin first

A lot less crowded than feared at the Warm Springs boat ramp. The sheriff did check our boater access and AIS permits

11:13am launch from Warm Springs

US 26 bridge just after launch. We would have crossed that bridge last night on the way to Madras, if we had not been rerouted due to wildfires

Flat water scenery with Jim and Sherry

Brief stop on island beach to attach some straps to the middle cargo module that I forgot at the putin. Good thing I brought spare straps!

Sheriff's jet boat buzzes by

Not sure why I took this one...

High plateau

Zoomed in on previous

Finally, a rapid (a small one)

Covering ground swiftly even in the flatwater

Lunch stop in the shade. Well into 90's today

Ranger takes raft out at Trout Creek ramp

Trout Creek bridge

Fighting headwinds and taking scenery pictures

Trains storm by a few times a day

Looking at potential camps

Looking up Warm Springs River. Only adds another 200 CFS to Deschutes flow

Actual markers don't quite match guide: RM "80.5 Wingdam: Three campsites, medium group, toilet, limited shade"

View from Whiskey Dick campsite to composting outhouse

Shaded tent area

Secluded boat eddy

Shaded kitchen area. Winds made cooking a bit difficult

Almost ready to launch at 12:14pm

Above Whitehorse rapid

Below first section

Next section doesn't look like much

Below Whitehorse rapid. Rated as class III+, but easy at this level

Tall Basalt cliffs

Approaching North Junction 1:31pm. Below bridge was nice shaded campsite, but even with the winds, we decided it was too early to stop today

Floater log in the distance

Large floater log. Luckily it grounded out on shallow channel

Narrowest spot so far on this section of the Deschutes. Giant rock island

Looking back at riverside apparently deserted ranch

Wide open again

More basalt scenery

Dant Ferry

Looking upstream to Dant Ferry

Approaching Buckskin Mary rapids. I can hear them!

Buckskin Mary rapids

Buckskin Mary rapids #2

Moved into the shade for the layover day

Four Chutes rapid from Buckskin Mary camp

As noted earlier, in lieu of baking on the beach, we moved under the tree shade

Layover day at Buckskin Mary. Reading, relaxing, short hike, whatever

Wandering down thru the next series of camps

Second of the Four Chutes

Doesn't quite match the guide: "RM 63.5 Four Chutes: Two campsites, large groups, toilet, no shade"

Early 10:30am launch today hoping to get back to Seattle earlier

The action starts right out with Four Chutes rapids. Des Chutes is French for The Falls

Pleasant trip so far. No real winds today

Lots of company on Segment 2

Harpham Flats - the popular day trip putin

Below Wapinitia rapid. Fun waves

Commercial guide backloads raft to entertain the peeps

Bridge in the distance. The trip is near it's end

Maupin homes with a view

Takeout just past US 197 bridge

2:21pm at Maupin City Park. Derig done and heading home
